Farmers are using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to make phone calls. Mariano's village is 21 km from the provincial capital of Digos where the Internet backbone has been installed and beamed to their cyber community by wireless technology. The cyber community project is being undertaken by the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture (Opapa), an alliance of two international organisations (the International Rice Research Institute and the India-based International Crops Research Institute for Semi-arid Tropics), six state colleges and universities, and nine agencies of the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Science and Technology. Opapa also offers other services like the mobile classroom for Internet technology and the texting centre. Opapa has also shown a new way to farmers to get updated on agriculture developments, particularly in rice farming, consult with experts on-line, and other services that the Web can provide.
ICTs has to go green, CeBIT Fair
CeBIT, the world's largest ICT fair that took place in Hanover, Germany focused on the Green ICT as theme of the year. A special publication, the 'Green IT Guide', enlists all the 'green' exhibitors, which displayed their products and services in a special theme hall. An industry consortium of about 150 companies are present at CeBIT. The Fair has set a target for 2010 to cut down energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 50%.
Ceylinco Nena Sarana empowers Sri Lankan students
Ceylinco Consolidated has launched an ambitious project to empower student in Sri Lanka to build their lives through e-Learning material. Under this new project, Ceylinco Nena Sarana, (www.ceylinconenasarana.org), 500 of the country's most deserving school will be gifted with 500 brand new, state-of-the-art computers and e-Learning material. Thus the project will touch the lives of 300,000 students and making it the largest education oriented CSR project undertaken by the private sector in Sri Lanka.
Kerala to be the first e-Literate state in India
The State Government launched an ambitious project called Akshaya in 2003 to address the issue of digital divide and the backward Malappuram district became the first e-Literate state, with at least one member of a family learning basic computer skills and earning an e-mail ID. The Technocity here and the Smart City in Kochi are global standard initiatives with most modern state-of-the-art infrastructure. The telecom density in the state is double the national average with electronic exchanges and fibre-optic cables running up to village level.
CARE to leverage ITC’s e-Choupal in rural health care
Hyderabad based CARE Group of Hospitals has launched a pilot project in Maharashtra in collaboration with ITC to provide quality medical facilities to the country's rural heartland. The first pilot project has been launched in Nagpur, where a 100-bed multi-speciality hospital has been established. This hub is electronically linked to three smaller medical centres in Yavatmal, Wardha and Amaravati. Around 400 villages with a million population are brought into the network.
