CoERI is Launching eLamai

Long Lamai is located in Baram region, Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia. With a total of 96 families (approx. 450 people) Long Lamai is the largest Penan settlement in the Baram region. Most of the respondents work as farmers. The education ratio is very low. Majority of villagers earn RM 50 - 100 (US$ 30) per month. The village doesn’t have clinic, community hall, public phone, post office, police station, firefighters, secondary school, tarred road and electricity supply. So the village is a real case of digital divide.

Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI) Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) selected Long Lamai as one of the site for DAGS rollout projects (eLamai). With this project the CoERI has build a Telecentre providing the facilities of telephone, fax, internet, printing, and photocopying. The Telecentre is powered up by Photovoltaic (PV) power systems. The project is supported by MOSTI, MIMOS and Japanese Governments.
On 10th December, 2009 CoERI and the villagers of Long Lamai is celebrating the launching ceremony of eLamai project.
