Are social networking sites just a bit of harmless fun and a good way to keep in contact or is there more to that?

The best approach would be to take advantage of the fact that people easily get hooked on social networks. In other words, it is easy to get their attention through social networks. And because of the rather fun and entertaining nature of such, people tend to visit them more regularly.

Different advocacies can be promoted through these social networks. telecentre.org is no exception.

With us being advocates of the global telecentre movement, I think that there is a great opportunity for us to make use of such networks to further our cause.

Social Networks will mature into much more useful networks, also they will increase openness, inclusion, participation and collaboration. However commercial interests of Social Networks can harm ethics of societies, this we need to watch when Social Network are used at rural telecenters.

Hi Sandra,
In this modern world we cannot afford to ignore the importance of Technology and its many benefits. Tele-Networking is fast becoming the societal norm especially for chats and other social uses. It is a pity that professional networking sites do not have as much hits as the social ones. It sure is a very inexpensive way of sharing and disseminating information that we can use as an avenue. What we need to work on is how to ensure that we can use it to share our experiences and get insights into new ideas. Moreover, Open source forums have been used for many years to give assistance to those in-need and even to post breakthroughs. I am therefore in support of an idea that can use these networks albeit professionally to enrich ourselves.

I think its definitely more than that, especially the ones on development for instance like The Development CAFE. It also brings in people and projects together, connecting resources, knowledge and building partnerships.
