There are various modes of communications in today’s world. Media plays a significant role in the field of communication. Radio channel is considered as one of the effective media channels since it is vastly used by majority of the people.

Information & Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka has encouraged and supported Nenasalas to establish internet based community radio stations. One of the fine examples is Nenasala located in Ampara district, Sri Lanka which is also known as "Prabhavi Resources Center". Prabhavi Resource Centre is successfully managing a community radio channel named “Prabhavi Community Radio”. It is said to be one of the first public internet broadcasters in Sri Lanka. Prabhavi is also the first radio station of the Eastern Sri Lanka that has ever broadcasted. With more than two years of experience, Prabhavi Community Radio is now live broadcasting from Ampara, Sri Lanka. By broadcasting from a rural Sri Lankan village, Prabhavi Community Radio is now addressing its community and the whole world with a variety of programs.

One of the successful Nenasala Managers, Mr Udesh Mallikarathana from Rathnapura district in Sri Lanka is also successfully managing a community radio station, named as “Ransara.lk”. Ransara.lk is broadcasting community news, sports news, weather forecast, entertainment programs, documentary programs, etc. Mr. Mallikarathna says that ‘Ransara.lk’ is popular among his community and during a short time period he has achieved a great success with this community radio channel.

Another Nenasala Manager from Badulla district, Mr Kandeeban is planning to launch a community radio station by the name “GnanavaVoice.com”. One of the special features of this community radio station is that, it is designed to serve the community (specially the school students) with an educational content. Mr. Kandeeban says that he is in the final stage of his initial preparations to launch the radio station and he is expecting that he will be able to launch the radio station within the next month.

Does your local network, accommodate telecentre based community radio stations?
How do those community radios serve the community?
Please share your ideas and experiences.

Best :)

Thanks Yapa for this discussion,
CRs is the best way forward for sustainable development, attaining the MDGs among many other targets beneficial to the community at large. remember community in the real context. Almost everyone in this age relies on radio for news and other briefs thus making it the best forum for any development. It breaks the heart to realise that back here in Kenya people demonise this idea. It is working in many areas for the best like we can confirm. although, a line has to be clearly drawn between this real issues, politics, tribalisms among other ills that kill this noble idea. It is hard to get frequency allocated to even a group that has proved its noble intention. This best explains why we can only talk of telecentres/ CRs down here but still awaiting frequency to help go on air. Thanks to UNESCO for stepping in.

Web Communutty radio technologies are simplyfied with ICTs at Large; I think it's a programming and content makes the difference. Their value is to be able to explore into undefined media spaces to be unique. It isnt important to build large userbase when it comes social purpose, but for the sustainability Communutty Web radios need to be innovative to know

1. What content and programming will create a permnent listner base ?
2. What would be the revenue strategies to be systainable and profitable ?

We can importantly use Ransara to train Nenasala operators, it's thinner than skye
I think WCR are here to stay; They just need to learn Radio Business and How they can do it online

Thank you very much for this report. Prabhavi Radio has been broadcasting weather report, News, Community programs, etc... We hope to do more trilingual programs. And we have set PA system which people can listen to the radio, as most people don't have internet. As well as, we are trying to expand Prabhavi Online Community Radio, The first Online Community Radio as FM radio also. You can send your comments to info@prabhavi.org , nelan@prabhavi.org . And your suggestions will be warmly welcome.

Director,

Es muy interesante esta idea de que los telecentros debe ser subsidiados por el estado sobre todo en paises en desarrollo o yo diria en precario desarrollo, en COLOMBIA estos subsidios se los dan a los empresarios como incentivos para que inviertan…
