Interview with Dr Arifa Rahman
Listen to Interview with Dr Arifa Rahman

Dr Arifa Rahman is the Professor of English in the Institute of Modern Languages in Dhaka University. She is also the President of Bangladesh English Language Teachers’ Association ( BELTA) .

In this exclusive interview with VOA Bangla Service Professor Arifa Rahman talks about the state of English Language in Bangladesh . She also talks about training of English Language teachers to adequately equip them with resources for teaching the language effectively. She says that although Communicative Language Teaching has become a kind of “buzz word” , there is very little being done to put it into practice.

Professor Rahman says as far as English language is concerned, there is a kind of paradox in Bangladesh. One the one hand there is an overwhelming interest for learning the language and on the other the skill is lacking even amongst the teachers. Therefore, the proficiency in English language is remarkably low amongst the learners in Bangladesh .

Arifa Rahman says that BELTA is working to improve the situation and despite limitations they have been holding regular workshops. Other organizations are working too to improve the standard of English in Bangladesh.

However, she emphasizes on cohesion and coordination amongst all organizations whose objective is train teachers and to raise the proficiency level of English amongst the learners and users of English language.

Hi Dr. Syed,

It's really nice of you to open this kind of forum and to share such work being done in improving language instruction in your own country. Dr. Arifa's initiative may be challenging but if all language teachers will be equipped with proper trainings and teachers' applications be monitored and evaluated, time will come that the communicative language teaching is a common practice of teachers in the field.

Moreover, such initiative teeming from policy makers down to teachers realizing such programs requires great deal of resources and commitment to achieve better and developmental change in the education sector. Ours is the same, here in the Philippines; CLT is still breaking its ground for Filipino teachers to adapt its effective methods and strategies responsive to the needs of time.

Reynald

Hello Dr. Syed,

Since it is one of my fields of expertise, I would be delighted to coordinate, monitor, and evaluate a project to train teachers and raise the proficiency of the English language. Are any grants available? If not, how do we petition for one?

With a grant, we can develop a framework that will become a model for common practices for teachers in all fields.

Anis,

One of my Gender Equality grant partners is from Bagladesh. Do you know how I can contact Dr. Arifa. I would love to talk with her and ask questions that might help me as I write the grant.

Thank you.
