We know that research, used in the service of the telecentre movement, can improve the impact of grassroots telecentres on development. That’s why, telecentre.org supports research that contributes to:

§  making telecentre impact assessment tools and results more useful;

§  understanding particular networks, geographical regions or telecentre issues better; and,

§  building our partners’ research capacity so they can help telecentres and the telecentre movement grow stronger.

Since 2005, we’ve supported research projects in 20 countries, often working in collaboration with international funding partners, to further our research and development objectives.

Currently, telecentre.org, in partnership with the Center for Information & Society at the University of Washington, manages The Global Impact Study of Public Access to Information and Communication Technologies, a CAD $7.2-million research project sponsored by Canada’s International Development Research Centre and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Focusing on telecentres, libraries, and other venues that provide public access to information and communication technologies (ICTs), the project aims to assess the impact of ICT use on development. The project will generate evidence to support policy and investment decisions and provide insights into how to develop better initiatives. It will also build research capacity in developing and emerging economies and improve methodological approaches by creating a common vocabulary and framework. The Amy Mahan Research Fellowship Program to Assess the Impact of Public Access to ICT is a component of the Global Impact Study. The fellowship program supports emerging scholars who undertake new and original studies on this important topic.

telecentre.org also supports local innovators and young researchers engaged in action research that documents and shares practical telecentre experiences. This work is reflected in many of telecentre.org’s publications.

Respecting intellectual property, enabling community members to build on each others' work, and translating research findings into action is important to us, so all findings from telecentre.org-supported research efforts are licensed using a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike Licence.
