The major ISP is Uganda Telecom but other telecoms do provide internet too. With the coming of SEACOM however, things are changing as we are seeing more and more ISPs taking root in the country.
Hello Bijaya, ICT is emerging as an important medium for communication and exchange as well as a tool for development, including at the local and community levels.
However, this potential is yet to be effectively leveraged. In part this is the result of an ICTD “affordable infrastructure and related service delivery and capacity deficit” that many rural and peri-urban areas continue to experience and in part because of the “development-policy and experience divide” that hinders the effective mainstreaming of ICT in development interventions.
The scope of Uganda's National ICT Policy Framework covers information as a resource for development, mechanisms for accessing information, and ICT as an industry, including e-business, software development and manufacturing.
Categories of information from different sectors, essentially aimed at empowering people to improve their living conditions include: health, education, agriculture, energy, environment, business, and science & technology.
ICT use in these sectors is at a particularly dynamic stage in Uganda, which means that there are new developments and announcements happening on a daily basis somewhere in the country.
Apparently, the construction of SEACOM's 15,000 km fibre optic undersea cable, linking East Africa to the rest of the world is already being implemented.
This signals the onset of a new era in the Information and Communications Industry in the East African region. Apparently, over reliance on satellite based data solutions is blamed for the high cost of internet in the region.
The construction of this fibre optic will help develop appropriate infrastructure to over see the rapidly increasing traffic. Opportunities to be realised will include high quality broadband international connectivity at affordable rates. It will also provide access to untapped emerging markets in voice, mobile and Internet traffic at lower costs.
Hope this has helped answer your question; there are certain issues i want to know from you though...What exactly are you planning to do in Uganda and when you plan on implementing your project?
Hello Bijaya, I am more than happy to fill in your form for detailed information if you could provide your a form, and your email address. Regards. Bhakta Raj Ranjit, Chairperson, Synergy Nepal
