About Me (biography and organization description)
Rural Communities Empowerment Center is a non-profit organization based in Ghana and a US registered charity dedicated to establishing one-stop-shop rural Community Resource Centers (CRCs) in Ghana. In the communities where they are established, the CRCs provide their users with four core services: library, information and communication technology (ICT), children’s facilities, and activities for women and adolescent girls’ empowerment programs. CRCs are created in partnership with local schools, have local champions and are managed by communities in areas where they are established.
Areas of interest/expertise and types of services provided:
Libraries
make available reading materials, a place to do school homework and receive mentoring in reading, writing, math and science. Teachers use the library resources to supplement their own teaching materials and to pursue their out- of class study needs.

ICT Programs
train children and teachers from primary grades through high school as well as adults in introduction to ICT to help break their isolation and make them competitive. Also being developed and implemented is the wireless node/access options to make Internet access available to thousands more rural people. www.wirelessghana.com

Children’s Programs (3-5 yrs)
provide a place for the community’s youngest members to read, explore, participate in educational and fun-filled activities, learn early what technology can do for them, and offer them the opportunity to learn and dream.

Women Programs
make available empowerment programs to develop or enhance skills for economic gains through ICT, communications skills training and tailoring. It is also a forum to articulate their specific needs.

About my Community where Telecentre is Build

Is there a big problem with people fleeing the countryside to go live in the city in Ghana?

Yes, this is a fact of life. There are very few job opportunities in the villages and small towns. Most people are farmers or basic craftsmen (carpenters, masons, electricians). Many earn around a $1/day. Significantly higher wages and more modern job opportunities are a big attraction of a city like Accra, or even Kumasi.

What is the Apirede District like, structurally speaking? Is there a lot of pov… Continue

Boateng, thank you for the pictures--they are wonderful! I am impressed with the order and focus of your students visiting the telecentre. Here are a couple of links to Creative Economy sites to help you understand where I am going with our discussion and the preparation of the inventory we mentioned.

This last document is an excellent discussion about Canada's Creative Economy. Please forgive me I have been extremely busy and hope to have more time this weekend to discuss this process in more detail.
All the best,

Could you please provide this so that the pics can be approved?

Thank you,

Hello Boateng, I am enjoying our chats and the idea of developing an incubator. I would value seeing some pictures of your Telecenters. I am sure this process and discussion would be of great interest to this network and we could all benefit from your work. I look forward to further collaboration and eagerly await your community inventory of local resources and ideas. Allow the process to take some time to be as inclusive as possible. All the best,
Jan
