Angelo Ramos, a key leader of the telecentre movement in the Philippines has prepared a short digital documentary/commentary giving us his personal perspective on who belongs and uses telecentres. It questions the gendered perception of how telecentres or public access points are used.

It is well done and very thoughtful, enjoy and spread the word... we are sissies and proud of it!

The book "Wireless Networking in the Developing World" is now available

Last October, 2008: The WNDW team announced the release of the third Spanish translation of Wireless Networking in the Developing World. This is the latest contribution to the growing collection of WNDW translations, which also include English, Arabic, French, and Italian.

The Future of Google Book Search

Some of you may have already heard that Google finally reached an agreement with authors and publishers (settling in court for over $125 million) to be able to expand their Google Books service. Now they will start to offer their still in copyright scanned books for purchase (out-of-copyright books are free). For now this agreement is only binding in the US.

Publication of practical guide to computer recycling

UNESCO is launching a free practical guide to computer recycling for entrepreneurs and project sponsors, on the occasion of a conference on Digital Solidarity being held in Lyon (France). UNESCO's partners in this project are the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), French consultants Tic Ethic, non-governmental organizations, Emmaüs Solidarité Ouagadougou and Ateliers du Bocage, along with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Silvia Caicedo works as a Program Officer with telecentre.org. Her responsibilities include programming and project development for Latin America and the Caribbean in for telecentre.org.

Silvia has worked in the international development field since 1997. Her knowledge and experience cover many areas: ICTs for development, online and F2F facilitation, organizational change, monitoring and evaluation, gender issues in ICTs, natural resources management, echohealth, and water quality monitoring.

Her academic training cuts across a number of disciplines at recognized universities in Canada and abroad (Ecuador). Fields include: Teacher’s Training, Education and Languages (B.Ed); International Development, Sociology and Gender Analysis (B.A & M.A). Master’s degree focused on the gender, cultural and relational changes taking place in Newfoundland in the wake of the cod crisis.
