Sri Lanka's migrant population is estimated at 2 million. With so many Sri Lanksns living and working abroad, familiy members remaining in Sri Lanka can be significantly affected by the aeparation from their loved ones.

In cooperation with the Microsft Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employement(SLBFE) , Sri Lanka Anti Narcotics Association (SLANA) provides Sri Lankan workers heading overseas with IT skills training to boost their economic, political and social empowerment.

When H.W.D. Inesh Samantha left Sri Lanka for building contract work in South Korea his absence in the family was mitigated by learning new technology skills. H.W.D. Inesh Samantha and his wife K.Mahesha Dilrukshi found out about the SLANA Training programme through the SLBFE

"My wife is now very familiar with using technology, even through she didin't complete her formal studies.During the training, we had hands-on experience using all the devices that will keep us connected, whenever we want. Having contact with my family while I'm away is a great comfort to me," says Inesh Samantha

In the Training Sessions, Inesh Samantha and his wife leatned how to use a computer, how to create documents in microsoft Word, to create, send and receive e-mails, scan and send pictures as attachments and use a mobile phone for data transmission.

"Now I am assured that even through I'm not around my family, I can still watch and keep in touch with family life. my wife will provide me with all the details through the internet and chatting, and I can talk to my kids too. Due to this experience, I would like to teach my kids further IT Skills," says Inesh Samantha

Many families keep in touch through the internet using technologies such as live messenger, skype, facebook etc. In Sri Lanka Cyber cafes are available in many towns for those who do not have computers. Net2phone facilities are available at communication stores in many towns.

However many migrant families are from the lower rungs of society and do not have adequate education to use such facilities. Also broadband facilities are expensive as well as computer hardware etc.
